Satellite Hospices
We provide this care and support to persons in their last phases of
incurable disease, making sure that their lives remain as meaningful
and comfortable as possible.
At any one time we have approx. 250 patients to take care of, most of whom are in the final stages
HIV/Aids. We therefore, have the added concern of taking care of the
children of these families, some of whom also diagnosed with the same
disease. Many of the children are orphaned at an early age and stay
under the care of grandparents and relatives, many of whom are
unemployed.
These children need to be fed, schooled and
entertained. Funds permitting, Hospice distributes food to these
children and tries to take them on outings to the Zoo or a nearby parks
or animal farms during the year.
Patients, who are still able to
function normally, are fetched for day care. They are brought to our
premises for a check up and a good meal and to spend the day socially
with other patients.
No patients are shown away because of
their inability to pay. Services are free of charge. In the rare cases
where a medical aid is not exhausted, the institution will be
approached. Patients are normally referred to us via their Doctor or
hospital.
Mamelodi
Since
the HIV/Aids pandemic is increasing, our integrated programme of home
and community based care is becoming more and more essential to the
well-being of the country. Mamelodi Hospice works closely with other
charities, churches, schools and communities to achieve these goals and
objectives.
Goal
Over and above our normal
call of duty as a Hospice, our further goal is to nurture, motivate and
care for the children and youth by implementing programmes and projects
that will encourage children and youth from impoverished backgrounds to
improve the quality of their lives.
Objectives
- Holistic and integrated approaches to the challenges confronting adults and children.
- Finding cost-effective ways of involving communities in decision making
- Help to change social norms and practices that force children to focus on their basic needs
- Strengthen community resource base in both economic and financial terms.
- Development of models of care and support for orphans and vulnerable children affected by the HIV/Aids epidemic.
The community–based responses to children include:-
- Substitute
or foster care families who can care for children when family members
are not available on an informal or formal basis - Family type
groups comprising orphaned children living together in a family unit
and cared for by carefully selected paid caregivers - Support to child – headed households consisting of children “parented” by an elder sibling
- Orphanage - which are the least desirable option for reasons stated above.
